In the heart of India, a centuries-old tradition is being revived. P-Tal, a company founded in 2019, is on a mission to bring back the glory of Thathera craft, a UNESCO-listed art form practiced by the indigenous Thathera community of Jandiala Guru, Amritsar.
This blog delves into the inspiring story of P-Tal, exploring its journey from a college project to a thriving brand that empowers artisans and brings beautiful handcrafted copperware to your home.
The Birth of P-Tal
From College Project to Purpose
The story of P-Tal isn’t your typical tale of a business startup. It all began in 2019 as a college project for students at Enactus SRCC, a non-profit organization focused on social entrepreneurship. These passionate individuals, along with co-founder Kirti Goel, identified a need to revive the Thathera craft, which was facing decline due to various challenges.

- Aditya Agrawal, Co-founder & CEO: Aditya’s leadership and vision guide P-Tal’s mission.
- Kirti Goel, Co-founder: Kirti’s dedication and passion for social impact fuel P-Tal’s commitment to empowering the Thathera community.
Together, Aditya and Kirti, along with their team, have transformed P-Tal from a college project into a successful social enterprise that’s not only reviving a dying art form but also creating a sustainable livelihood for the Thathera artisans.
India’s UNESCO-Listed Craft
P-Tal’s story is deeply intertwined with the Thathera craft, a heritage passed down through generations in the Thathera community. This traditional metalworking technique involves shaping brass and copper into beautiful and functional utensils, cookware, and decorative items.
The intricate work and craftsmanship of Thathera artisans have earned it a well-deserved place on the prestigious UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This recognition highlights the cultural significance and artistic value of the Thathera craft.
However, despite its rich history, the Thathera community faced challenges in recent times. Increased competition from mass-produced items and a lack of market access threatened the survival of this age-old tradition.
Where it all Started
The founders of P-Tal recognized the need to revitalize the Thathera craft and empower the community. They saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between these skilled artisans and a wider audience. This initial spark of purpose laid the foundation for P-Tal’s mission: to revive the Thathera craft, provide sustainable livelihoods for the artisans, and bring these beautiful handcrafted pieces back into Indian homes.
